Tom Walter is a Division I baseball coach and social impact advocate who has earned more than 900 career victories at George Washington, New Orleans, and Wake Forest. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to guiding every student-athlete toward graduation and involvement in service while supporting their growth on and off the field. At Wake Forest, his leadership has brought the program to national prominence, including a No. 1 ranking and repeated NCAA tournament appearances.
Early Years
Thomas was born in New York and raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. His personal and professional values took shape during his time at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. As a student-athlete, he served as team captain in both his junior and senior years. His academic performance earned him selection to the Big East All-Academic Team in 1990 and 1991. He was also named team MVP in his final season and recognized as freshman of the year when he began his college playing career.
After earning a degree in finance, Tom enrolled in a master’s program at George Washington University. During his time as an MBA student, he supported fellow athletes by tutoring in calculus, overseeing athletic equipment for all teams, and working as an assistant coach. That season, the team won the Atlantic 10 title and earned a spot in the 1992 NCAA tournament.
Establishing a Force at George Washington University
Tom began his head coaching career at George Washington University in 1996. Over eight seasons, he developed the program into a consistent winner, finishing with a 273–181 record. That total made him the winningest coach in the university’s baseball history. In his final five seasons, his teams averaged 39 wins per year, establishing the program as a top competitor in the region.
In 2002, the team qualified for its fourth NCAA tournament appearance. That same year, he was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. During his tenure, 26 players from the program signed professional contracts, including one who went on to reach the Major Leagues.
His contributions were recognized in 2019 when he was inducted into the GW Athletics Hall of Fame. He is also honored in the AAABA Hall of Fame and the Cambria County Hall of Fame.
Resilience Through Adversity at the University of New Orleans
In 2004, Tom Walter of Wake Forest accepted the role of head coach at the University of New Orleans. The program faced unprecedented challenges the following year when Hurricane Katrina caused widespread devastation. The storm displaced the team and destroyed his home.
The team relocated temporarily to Las Cruces, New Mexico, and later to Mobile, Alabama. Despite the disruption, the group achieved a 30-win season—their first such result since 1996. In 2007, the program won the Sun Belt Championship. In 2008, they made a return to the NCAA tournament, becoming the only team in Louisiana to achieve that milestone in the post-Katrina era.
Transforming Wake Forest Baseball
Tom arrived at Wake Forest in 2009 and spent the next 15 years building the program into one of national relevance. His leadership led to several NCAA tournament appearances and a regional title in 2017.
In 2011, he made national news when he donated a kidney to a freshman outfielder. The act was featured on ESPN’s E60 and led to an appearance with his daughter on NBC’s “The Wall.” The story highlighted his dedication to the well-being of his players.
In the last four seasons, Wake Forest Baseball has remained among the nation’s most competitive programs. It is one of only seven nationally to earn either a 1- or 2-seed in the NCAA tournament each year during that stretch. No other team in the Atlantic Coast Conference accomplished that. In 2023, the team reached the No. 1 ranking and made a Final Four appearance in Omaha. He was named ACC Coach of the Year for that season.
The Launch of Get In the Game
In 2020, Thomas Walter of Wake Forest founded Get In the Game, a nonprofit focused on promoting dialogue about race, service, and leadership among high school students. The program works with youth aged 13 to 18, combining guided conversations, personal reflection, and community engagement.
The initiative has reached approximately 1,500 students. In 2021, it received the Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award from the ESPN/Disney Sports Humanitarian Awards. The honor came with a $100,000 grant from Disney to support future expansion.
Giving Without Expectation
Tom has long supported service as a core value. Each year, he donates more than $25,000 to various charitable causes. He is also preparing a $25,000 donation to the LGBTQ office on campus.
His teams regularly take part in volunteer work with organizations such as Brenner’s Children’s Hospital, Goodwill of North Carolina, Habitat for Humanity, JDRF, Parenting Path, and the Special Olympics. Players also join events like Walk a Mile in Her Shoes and support youth through RBI Baseball Academies.
Approaching a Milestone
Thomas Walter is approaching 1,000 career wins. He is one of only two active head coaches to lead three different programs to the NCAA tournament. His career reflects a commitment to excellence in coaching, a deep belief in education and service, and leadership rooted in consistency and care.
